Kotomi Aoki's Niji, Amaete yo is already getting live-action offers

When the manga you like is so underground you have to cover the news about it yourself.

You may have noticed, dearest reader, that I've recently picked up another series to blog about on this modest dumpyard of reviews and comments. Said manga is Niji, Amaete Yo, by Boku no Imouto ni Koi wo Suru, Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu, and Kanojo wa Uso wo Aishisugiteiru creator Kotomi Aoki. I'm still catching up with the series as I comment it on KiraKira, but upon buying Cheese!'s 2018 issue 3, where the manga's chapter 7 was serialised, I found some very interesting information: according to the magazine, they are already receiving "floods" of live-action offers. And the series is only two volumes in.
For those of you who haven't been reading my comments, NijiAma (translated as Niji, Lean on Me) is the story of Gaku, Hiyori, and Niji, a trio of friends in their third year of high school. Gaku is currently crushing hard on Niji, but a series of misunderstandings leads him to believe Hiyori is currently dating her. Yet because Hiyori has a secret he's desperate to keep hidden, he and Niji decide to keep up this pretence for a while — cue a wave of heartbreak and drama large enough to drown the world.

Bearing in mind that all three of Aoki-sensei's previous popular works (BokuImo, BokuKimi, and KanoUso) received live-action adaptations it should come as no surprise that NijiAma is also getting offers to be turned into a live-action (film or whatever), but holy frikity-friks, they sure wasted no time with this one. However there is no confirmation that they've sold the rights for it yet, so it looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer before we see Niji, Hiyori, and Gaku in the flesh.
Personally, I'd like for Aoki-sensei to stay in control of her series for a while longer before a live-action is given the green-light, especially because the series is still taking its first steps.

Additionally! As part of a series of NijiAma freebies, Cheese!'s issue 5, published on the 24th of March, came with a drama CD adapting an original script by Aoki-sensei, where Gaku and Niji are played by Nobuhiko Okamoto (岡本信彦) and Maaya Uchida (内田真礼) respectively. The drama CD apparently depicts content from the first chapter, as well as Niji and Gaku's first meeting in junior high school. I haven't received my copy of the CD yet so I can't comment on it, but I'm definitely excited to get my paws on it!!

Well my lovelies, what do you think of these developments? Are you excited about the prospect of getting a live-action adaptation soon-ish enough? Truth be told, I'd like for Aoki-sensei's work to be adapted into an anime too just once in this lifetime... Alas, that seems unlikely to happen.

  1. I think it would be one of the few manga turned live-action movie that could work, since it's slice of life (no magic nor supernatural things) as well as addressing current issue that many people face. I hope they will stay with high schoolers. It's cool that it could be turned into a live-action movie.
On the last manga pic you showed, it was clear Niji is angry/upset with kiss, so I too am looking forward to her kicking Gaku's ass, lol. I hope that the next novel has Hiyori coming out to Gaku, but something tells me it's going to be more drawn out & angsty. I really hope that there won't be hate crimes, although that could be a way that Hiyori & Gaku grow closer, like Gaku would help with rehab & realizes he's in love Hiyori. I'm just guessing based off what you've aid about the author's writing style. ( it would be a lot like the end of season 1 of Queer as Folk & beginning of season 2 with the rehab & hospital stalking, the American version involving Justin & Brian)

I hate to be an annoying fan girl, but I can't wait to read your review of Akatsuki no Yona! I loved how Hak threatened to kill anyone who even thinks about hurting "his" princess. & it looks like Tae-Jun is going to be in trouble & probably Ogi. Between Kye-Sook & General Kyu-Ga plus all the rumors, it almost looks like a probable set-up for a civil war. But I guess that's to be expected since the people would learn of the regicide since a lot of people know about it. It looked like the sky tribe was part of the plan to kill King Il & the previous Fire clan leader. I can't wait until the 20th to see what will happen... I just want an adorable Dark Dragon baby!

One thing I've wondered about is why Yona never got one of those archery gloves to protect her hands, but I know it's not really a big thing.

Can't wait to see how both of the series go. Also, thank you so much for all your hard work on the translations.
